course description
Description taken from Pine Manor College literature:
FYS 101: First Year Seminar - A Picture's Worth a Thousand Words, Pine Manor College (4 credits)
We live in a time of visual overload – in one day alone, the average American is exposed to between 500-1500 advertising images and watches about seven hours of TV. Fewer and fewer people read newspapers. How does this affect our perception of the world and ourselves if society is mediated primarily through visuals? Through critical readings, field trips to various locations in Boston and personal, hands-on creation of images, we will explore this question and look critically at the production and consumption of visual images in modern culture. In addition to the content of the course, this seminar will also address transitional issues that many first year college students face. An introduction to all of the services that the college has to offer (library, health and wellness center, learning resource center, etc.) will be incorporated into the class as well.
