Jennifer L. Mintzer is an experienced educator, administrator, filmmaker and writer from the Philadelphia area. She is currently the Travel Manager at the Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
She previously served in roles as the Assistant Director of Career and Personal Development for Global Engagement at Neumann University, as Site Manager for Middlebury-Monterey Language Academy's Pomona College campus in California, as the Director of the Cultural Care Au Pair Training School on Long Island and as an Assistant Professor of Communication at Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston. At Pine Manor, Professor Mintzer served as chair of the Communication Department, counseled students as an academic advisor and taught a wide array of production and critical media studies/communication courses. In addition to teaching at Pine Manor, she has also served as an Adjunct Professor of Communication at Drexel University, Arcadia University and Ursinus College in the Philadelphia area. For her teaching excellence, she was awarded the Lindsey Professorship for Outstanding Academic Performance and Scholarship Promise by Pine Manor College and a Graduate Student Teaching Award by the International Communication Association.
Prior to her career in academia, Mintzer worked as a producer and nonlinear video editor at Haley Productions (now Allied Pixel) in Media, Pennsylvania, where she worked on media projects for corporate clients such as DuPont Pharmaceuticals, the Heinz Wildlife Refuge and numerous radio stations throughout the country.
Mintzer’s primary research and teaching interests are images of race and gender in the media and intercultural communication. Her interest in intercultural communication developed at an early age and was further developed in doing a minor in German in college.
As an undergraduate, Mintzer was chosen as one of five students to participate in a pilot program to study abroad for a summer in Tübingen, Germany. Following the trip, she spent her senior year of college living in the international dorm at Ursinus College where she made numerous friends from around the world. As a graduate student, Mintzer studied abroad in London for a summer and served as a resident assistant at the International House of Philadelphia.
In 2007, she was awarded a sabbatical leave from Pine Manor and during that time, she traveled around the world as a visiting lecturer on the Spring 2007 Semester at Sea voyage. During the 100-day voyage the ship circumnavigated the world, making port stops in the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, Brazil, South Africa, Mauritius, India, Malaysia, Vietnam, China and Japan.
In addition to teaching on Semester at Sea, she has also continued to promote intercultural awareness/sensitivity among students as a group leader to the United Kingdom with The Experiment in International Living during the summers of 2010 and 2011, as the Assistant Director of Career and Personal Development for Global Engagement at Neumann University and as the Travel Manager at the Lauder Institute at the University of Pennsylvania.
Mintzer completed her Ph.D. coursework in Mass Media and Communication at Temple University and holds her M.F.A. in Film and Electronic Media from American University and B.A. from Ursinus College where she double majored in English and Communication Arts and minored in German. She is a Phi Beta Kappa inductee. Mintzer also holds a Certificate in International Tour Management (CITM) from the International Guide Academy and an International Diploma in English Language Teaching (IDELT) from Bridge-Linguatec.
In her free time, she enjoys traveling, reading and adventure activities.
