When I awoke
I found random petals
around the house
like a de-limbed murder victim
In the refrigerator,
on the roof,
on top of my pillow,
at the bottom of the neighbors' pool

I tried to figure out
the original meaning
and structure
to know what I was looking at
A daisy, perhaps
or a petunia,
it was unclear if this was
fake or real
Until I stuck the thorn
back on
the stem
and suddenly remembered
why
I had disassembled it
the night before
