Tutoring

My Qualifications:

Please feel free to browse my website to view my curriculum vita for my qualifications and to learn more about me. In a nutshell, I have taught at the college level as a professor of communication and I have worked for professional tutoring companies in the past. I double majored in English and Communication in college but I've always had a strong math aptitude as well, and I attended college on a full academic scholarship which I achieved, in part, because I scored above a certain level on the SAT. Hopefully I can help students achieve the same results to qualify for their own scholarships!

My Tutoring Approach:

I try to keep in mind that everyone has different styles of learning - what works for one person might not work for another. When I work with students, I try to gauge what will work best for them and constantly ask them for feedback if something I'm explaining makes sense. I think one of the biggest stumbling blocks to learning is when students are afraid to ask questions for fear of looking stupid. To this end, I try to create a comfortable environment for students where they will feel okay if they make mistakes and they can tell me they still don't understand something even if I've explained it ten times already. If there's still confusion on the part of the student, that just means I need to find a way for it to make sense to him/her. Sometimes even the brightest students will have trouble with something for various reasons (not "clicking" with the teaching style of their teacher or confusion in the classroom) and I try to be as patient and encouraging as possible.

In past teaching evaluations, students have described me as:

  • "encouraging"
  • "helpful"
  • "easygoing"
  • "well-prepared"
  • "organized"
  • "very knowledgable"
  • "well read"
  • "very understanding"
  • "very nice"
  • "professional"
  • "funny"
  • "respectable"
  • "informative"
  • "pleasant"
  • "personal"
  • "never boring"
  • "creative"
  • "always willing to help"

More details about SAT tutoring:

From past experience in tutoring, I have found that it is most helpful if students meet with me once a week for two hour blocks of time. Approximately 10-12 sessions are recommended. In between sessions, students will have some "homework" to complete that we will review during our next session.

I require students I tutor in SAT prep to buy "The Official SAT Study Guide" book (it's a big blue book available through Barnes and Noble).

I also require students to purchase any set of SAT-related flashcards (the brand isn't important - as long as they are flashcards marketed toward the SAT).

Tutoring Rate:

My tutoring rate is $60 per hour.

Payment Methods:

Payment is required at the end of each lesson and can be made by cash or check.

Background Check and References:

It is always smart to run a background check for anyone working with children! As such, I am more than happy to have you run a background check on me or I could provide you with a copy of a recent background check. I would also be happy to provide you with the contact information of families I have tutored for in the past if you wish to call them as references.
